Hal – i – tos – is (stank breath)

Oy the worst. Even if you don’t have a coworker with horrible breath I am sure you have run into someone who constantly emits noxious odors from their mouth. And I know…it is seriously inescapable. This could be the nicest person in the world and you could be eternally interested in what they have to say but the only thing you can focus on are the smells coming from their mouth.

The worst part is, no one and I mean no one is going to tell them. Because no one wants to be the jerk that insults them. You’re probably thinking well there is just no nice way to go about telling someone that their oral hygiene sucks without offending them. Guess what, you are correct. No matter how cautiously you broach this subject, you’re bound to upset the recipient of the news.

I’m not entirely sure having bad breath is considered an annoying office habit because it’s not an actual habit but it is in fact very annoying.

So here’s  how we’re going to deal with this situation. We’re going to explore alternatives to a direct approach. Now there is still a possibility that someone’s feelings will be bruised by no one will know who is behind it.

  • Go to a dentist office, pick up a pamphlet on bad breath and drop it on their desk when they’re not there

Ok this is more of a hint drop.  Hopefully they get the hint, read the pamphlet and realize that they need see a dentist.

Let’s say this person isn’t that intuitive and they think perhaps someone accidentally dropped this pamphlet and it just so happened to land on their desk. Yes I can see your eyes rolling into the back of your head… if that’s the case you will need to do something more drastic. Like this service that will send an anonymous email or text to this person for you:

They will never know who it came from but they will be made aware of their stinky situation and the site even provides some solutions to design with the odor.

Lastly, often times bad breath is caused by bacteria in the stomach.  Specifically something called H Pylori bacteria. This is actually a condition that can be easily treated with a course of antibiotics. Again I’m no doctor and it may not be the ultimate cause of their bad breath but if it is, at least they have a chance of curing it.

In this case your best bet would be to grab a book from amazon and drop it in their chair when they’re not there. Yes it will cost you a little money but trust me you’ll be much happier when you can carry on a conversation with your coworker and no longer be annoyed!

  1. Hi Becca,

I really like this site. Your writing style is so easy to ready and captivating. The article was not too long and provided just enough info. But bad breath is indeed an annoying office habit. Imagine sitting next to someone you have to interact with 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, 52 weeks a year. That’s a lot of ‘stank breath’. So yeah – annoying! So I totally love love love your Nudge Notes solution. I’m going to use it right now (not for bad breath but for something else). But yeah. It’s always difficult to pull someone up on such a personal and embarrassing issue. Thanks for the information. I’m sure a lot of people will benefit from this article and there’d be a few less ‘stank breath’ people out there because of it.

    Cheers
